Our History

Greythorn Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten (GreythornECC) provides long day care to 91 children per day. It was established as a 40 place Early Childhood Centre in January 1997 with funding from both the City of Boroondara and the National Childcare Strategy.

In January 2017 Greythorn Early Childhood Centre Inc was relocated to the site of the Balwyn Leisure Centre for a term of 18 months to facilitate the North Balwyn Hub project.

In July 2018 we returned to the original site where we could now cater for 76 Long Day Care places and 15 Occasional Care places – all eligible for Child Care Subsidy.

Greythorn Early Childhood Centre was rebuilt to include a hub of community services. The service is co-located with an occasional care service, a local library, the local Returned Service League (RSL), Access Health and the Maternal Child Health Service and this has enabled the service to form close relationships with all services, which support the families who attend the service.

We attract and retain the highest quality staff who are consummate professionals driven to be and do the best. At GreythornECC, individual aspirations are put second to the needs of the children as they are central to GreythornECC’s very existence.

One of the most important aspects of GreythornECC is that it is a community based centre. This means that profits are directly reinvested into the centre and not portioned out to shareholders or licensees.

Children’s needs are always put first. This is reflected in the use of regular relief staff should staff fall ill, employment of experienced and mature staff and the constant acquisition of toys and equipment to satisfy the varying needs of our children.

Our Service caters for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. We are open from 7.00am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, (50 weeks of the year) and closed on Victorian public holidays. Fees are not charged for public holidays, or during the Christmas closure.

We have 6 rooms (including occasional care):

  • One funded 4 year old Kindergarten Program

  • One 3-5 year old Pre Kinder Room

  • An Early Learners Room for children aged 2-3 years; and

  • Two Young Learners Rooms for children under 2.

Our Occasional Care Service caters for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years.

We are open from 9.00am to 2.00pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays during the school terms and closed on Victorian school holidays and public holidays.
